My Review: 
Dr. Deanna Nicholas is the only surviving geneticist working for the General after the war.  Her boss died, but before he did they were the ones to end the war by making a virus that killed.  There was a vaccine made, but it had very adverse affects on those that were given it.  Deanna has morals and ethics, which her senior geneticist did not.  She doesn't think it's right to kill the innocent just for the good of science like he did.  There is no way to make children who are not "tainted" by this vaccine's side effects, so the world is headed to ruin.  Or is it?  The General gets a message from a prison that was kept secure all these years and also has inmates that were not given the vaccine, so are not affected by it.  The only hope for humanity is to test these inmates and see if they really are unaffected and could maybe help repopulate the world.  Deanna goes to the old prison herself for medical assessments and to bring them supplies.  She takes a huge risk doing this, after all these are inmates and even worse, inmates who have not seen a woman in many years and who are the most violent of inmates.  She has to put her trust in Tom, the inmate who seems to have the "best" background of them all and is most willing to try and help and keep her safe.  Will the inmates really be unaffected like they claim or will she have risked her life and made an extremely long trip for nothing?  Will she survive the stay in the prison with all these male, dangerous inmates to even find out if they are affected or not?  And what if they are unaffected, who can partner with them that is female and unaffected herself?  Is this one big bust of an idea and trip and money?  Deanna is willing to risk it all to find out.

I must say that at first I was a bit lost and confused in the book, but after the first chapter or so it all came together and I could jump in with both feet.  This book has a very good and different plot line than others I have read or seen.  It also has great characters, my favorite being Deanna and Tom.  I thought it really seemed to move right along and I was happy and anxious to come back to it if I had to stop reading.  I couldn't wait to see what happened next to Deanna as she dove into this mission.  There are some twists and turns too, that really make the book.  I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes science, mystery, or just a great read.  It was such a unique plot and book that it was made all the better!  This is a truly talented author and I would read more of her books anytime.

My Review:
I always find it hard to write reviews for books compiled of many short stories.  I don't want to give away the storylines, which I find hard not to do if I am summarizing them.  So, here is a little bit different style of review for me.  No summary of the stories, just my view on the entire collection and which one(s) I found I liked the best.

I really enjoyed these short stories.  They were very well written and very heartfelt stories.  I think my two favorite stories in this book were "The Little Books that Ran Away" and "My Father's Old Car".  I found these two stories extra touching to me personally.  I could "see" the stories as I read them, which is always a true sign to me of great writing.  I think this author does a fantastic job with this book of short stories and reading them you could tell he writes from his heart and soul.  I plan on reading his other works too.  

Great author, great stories, great writing!!!

My Review: 
Alright, so this book is about a woman who is turned into a vampire by another vampire.  The twist is that the vampire that turned the woman is a lesbian vampire, so only has a taste for women's blood and anyone she turns becomes the same way no matter if they were lesbian or not before being bit and turned.  I don't want to give anything away, and this is a super short read, so that may be difficult if I draw on with any kind of summary.  Therefore, I will say this for a summary besides what I have said, it contains vampires, sexual content, misunderstandings, closed minded people, and revenge.

I can't say as I loved this short read, but I think it has potential.  I didn't care for it because it seemed to not have much substance to it at first and then just when I was getting in to the book and wanting to see where it went....it ended.  It had an abrupt ending and one that was not a conclusive ending by any means.  I realize this was done so you pick up the next book, but it made me a little upset and disappointed.  I think I may shy away from any of his other books because of this.  There are short stories that are parts of stories and then there are short chunks of a story that belong IN the story not the one and only short story.  I wasn't greatly satisfied with the read, but for what it was, I guess it was ok.  The writing itself was good, as in the descriptions and the characters.  I think the story would be great if it was a bit longer and ended at a better spot.  It reminded me of a TV show in a series, how it ended with you knowing there was more to come and to "stay tuned" so to speak.

My Review: 
Thame wants nothing more than to get revenge for his father's untimely death.  He refuses to believe the things he hears from others about how his father was a traitor.  His goal is to rebuild the Sword of Tundra, a sword that is more powerful than even Thame can grasp.  Can rebuilding the sword really help Thame, or will it only make his life worse?  What can go wrong with recreating a weapon that can act on the owners emotions right?  Standing in Thame's way is his spiritual twin, a twin that is nothing but evil.  Besides trying to figure out the past about his father, trying to rebuild the Sword of Tundra, and dealing with his evil spiritual twin...Thame's aunt and empress is dead set on helping Thame marry.  Can Thame deal with all of this and still come out on top and alive?

How did I feel about this book?  Well, to be honest I am not sure.  It had great characters and a good plot line, but it just didn't do it for me personally.  It was well written and had a very natural flow, that was not the issue. The issue was just my personal preferences.  I am a fantasy reader, but not an avid one.  I enjoyed reading this book because it was new to me and a different genre than I normally shoot for.  I don't like to always read the same thing so this book was good to break that up for me.  I think my indifference to fantasy is why I didn't enjoy this book as much as I very well could have.  I think this would be a terrific read for someone who loves fantasy.  It just wasn't for me.  I did like the action/adventure of it all though and, like I stated before, I very much enjoyed the characters.  I may not have loved the book personally, but I didn't feel I had to quit reading it either, so that to me says something about the book itself.  It had enough in it that made me want to finish it, rather than putting it down forever.  I think the author did a fantastic job writing this book and would read other works by the author.

My Review: 
What an emotional and powerful book this was for me.  This book is a continuation of Farsighted, which I loved also.  In this book we see things from Simmi's point of view instead of Alex's.  Simmi is a "chunky" girl in her eyes and hates that she is continually gaining weight.  She starts to compensate by not eating, or trying not to eat.  I felt like I could really relate to Simmi, having been a chunky child myself, and being a chunky adult after having my son on.  She struggles every day just to try and be "normal" and not let her friends know how she is feeling.  Hard to feel pretty if you carry a few extra pounds, but even harder if you have a girl friend like Shapri who is skinny and beautiful.  Simmi deals with other things too such as her new views on her powers, her new boyfriend...Alex, and the boy who tried to kill her who now lives with Alex and his family.  Having a boyfriend can be bad enough, but being insecure, worried, and becoming attracted to Dax, the boy who tried to kill her makes this relationship stuff really difficult on Simmi.  She knows Alex loves her, but she just doesn't feel she can reciprocate that feeling yet...if ever.  Can Simmi come to terms with her powers, her weight, and her relationship with Alex?  Will she stay with Alex when she isn't sure she really loves him?  Would she really risk her friendship to Alex too, by going after the "bad boy" instead?  Will she ever realize that she is beautiful no matter what size she is?

Real emotional issues and circumstances are present in this book and that is what makes it great!  As a reader I was able to relate and come to love the characters in this book even more than when I first met them in the first book of the series.  I felt like if I could I would have reached into the book and hugged Simmi.  I felt the author really put her whole heart and soul into writing this book.  I can't wait to see what happens next and how the relationships grow and the characters grow in the following book.  It can't come out soon enough for me.  This book may not have been as action packed and dramatic as ones I normally read, but I found myself enjoying the ride through it just the same.

My Review: 
I must say that I was quite drawn into this book.  I loved the "feel" of the book and the greatness of the characters.  My favorite character was Alex, the young boy from a lower class family, who is also blind.  His life is not an easy one, but nothing could possibly prepare him for the changes that are in store for him.  Alex starts having feelings for Simmi the minute he smells her as she walks into the classroom he is in.  She smells of sweet coconuts to him.  They soon become friends and are soon connected by a common bond of having special gifts that they soon try to learn how to use.  Alex is finding that he is beginning to "see" into the future and he is not liking what he sees at all.  He new found friend Simmi seems to be in danger according to his visions, but will anyone believe him?  Why is this all starting now?  And why has his Dad left them all of the sudden, leaving his Mom heartbroken?  Some of these questions can be answered by the new neighbor of his Mom's flower shop, who just happens to be a psychic.  He only hopes she can help him understand his new "gift" and how to control it before it is too late for Simmi.

This was a nice, easy read for me and I quite enjoyed it.  It had adventure and mystery along with the supernatural/psychic twist.  The characters were also wonderful and well developed, as was the writing itself.  I never put the book down and worried that I wouldn't be able to continue on reading it.  I found it very easy and very tempting to continue reading and finish.  I also can't wait for Simmi and Alex to grow even more as the series continues.  I can't wait to see what they become and how their gifts grow and work for them as they age and what other adventures they come upon.  I wonder how Alex's gift will help or hurt him as he continues on trying to fit in and just get through high school.

Definitely going to keep reading on in the series.  Just starting the second book Open Heart and can't wait to continue reading it.

Book Review: Imperfect Beauty

My Review:
To add much more to the summary above would be to spoil the book due to it being a shorter story, so in contrast to my usual summary and then thoughts, I will go straight to my thoughts.

I thought this was a wonderfully sweet and romantic story.  It shows the reader that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and not everyone has the same views on what beauty is.  Alasdair is a wonderful character who doesn't let being blind stop him from doing things he enjoyed when he had his sight.  He has also learned to view things in new ways and with an open mind.  Trisha is a woman who was beautiful in every way, until an accident changed that.  Now she thinks she is just an ugly woman who people shy away from.  When she meets Alasdair it is magical because he sees her for who she is, instead of judging her by her looks first.  I think this book gives off a wonderful message.  I loved the flow of the book and it was very well written.  Sometimes shorter books tend to be choppy or missing detail, but this one was neither of those things.  It was very detailed and flowed very easily along.

If you are in the mood for a short, but heartwarming story, this is your read!

I have been reading and reviewing like a mad woman!  I know you have not seen much in the way of action on my blog here, but I swear to you I have been working.  :-)

Coming up in the next week or so I plan to start posting my reviews that I have done.  I found that I was reading and writing up my reviews like crazy, but seemed to not have the time to post right after writing them.  So, this week I plan to post at least one a day or every other day (if I do other posts that day).  I also have a few author guest posts coming up in November that you will want to catch with my review of their book.

Just wanted to post an update on my touch and go posts lately.  I kept thinking I was doing really well because I was finishing and writing reviews, and was kind of shocked at myself when I looked at my last review post.  Lol, here I am reading away and completing book after book, and I haven't been posting the reviews.  tisk tisk at me.  :-)

Book Review: Mask of Shadows

My Review: 
What a book!  I loved it!  Michael Drake has had a lot of hard times in his life and it seems no matter who comes in to his life, he just "breaks" them.  He feels alone and like everything he does ends in disaster and heartache.  He loves his Jazz club that he owns, but finds himself spending less and less time there as he is asked to use his private eye skills again for a friend of his.  Alex, his long time friend from high school, wants him to follow his wife and see if she is cheating on him.  Working for a friend may not be Michael's best idea, but he really needs the money, so he agrees.  Allison, Alex's wife, is a wonderful woman with looks as beautiful as her attitude.  Michael always wanted to be more to her than a friend, but he would never cross the line of friend and lover with her since she is with his best friend.  When Michael investigates her behaviors and what she is really doing, he is shocked to find out that she is doing so to try and get him.  She has secretly loved him too all these years.  Michael makes a bad decision in the heat of passion and sleeps with Allison, but refuses to spend the night with her at the hotel.  The next morning guilt is eating Michael away and he needs to talk to Alex about this.  Before he can do that, however, he is given the shock of his life...Allison is dead!  She was murdered the night before/early morning.  Now Michael is asked by his friend to look into the murder and who really did it.  The cops are thinking Alex is to blame, but he swears he didn't do it.  Can Michael really help solve this murder without telling Alex that he was with Allison that night before she was killed?  Who would want to kill Allison anyway?  Is Alex really as innocent as he says he is?  What other secrets lie in this web of friends?  

Mixed in with this murder is also the mystery of the serial killer that seems to be on the loose, that is killing young women who they think will not be missed.  Along with all this is also the past that haunts Michael of his love of his life disappearing, his ex wife up and leaving...with his daughter, and just a mixed up past.  Can the murder of Allison have anything to do with the serial killings?  Or is it all just a coincidence seeing as how she really doesn't seem to fit the serial killers "type"?  Michael has a lot to sort out if he wants any answers of any kind that's for sure.  While he is dealing with all that he is also trying to keep a troublesome nephew out of trouble after he is suspended from school for trying to make out with a white girl in the broom closet at school.  He doesn't quite understand that at that time, it still is a bit unheard of or improper for, a black boy to be with a white girl.  Then there's the bad influence of Alex's little brother on him too, which isn't helping the situation.  Michael just hopes to keep his nephew out of trouble and out of jail.

Oh my, I just can't get over this book.  I loved every word on every page of it!  This mystery is full of action, adventure, lies, deciet, friendships, and paths from the past.  I have not read any of this authors other works, but I think I may have to after reading this book.  A lot happens in this book and is going on in this book, but not in a way that makes it seem too much.  I loved the writing style and the quick pace of the book.  There were no lull points and at no point did I ever think of not continuing the read.  I read this book in just two days, I just couldn't put it down.  My favorite character was Michael, the main character.  He has a lot of baggage from his past, but he is good at what he does...even if he doesn't think so.  I felt connected to the characters as the book went on and could just feel the emotions of them.  This book kept me guessing all the way until the end on who really did kill Allison.  One thing is for sure, many things are never as they seem.  I am not just talking about in this book either.  Masks are always worn by people to hide things they don't want others to see about them.  It's what is behind those masks that we can see peoples deepest darkest secrets revealed.  As was the case in this book.  

I found this to be an easy read also.  I think it may have been an easy read because of the fast pace of it.  Very well written and a great joy to read.  Any mystery lover should put this book on their "to read" list.  There was one quip I had with the books conclusion, but it was still a great read.

Book Review: White Lilac

My Review: 
Caryn wants nothing more than to escape the pain and guilt of watching her friend die while training in the water.  Kai wants nothing more than to forget the pain of not knowing who his family really is and why he was dumped of at an orphanage to be raised since age 3 or 4.  Caryn is from a place that trains and genetically alters people's DNA to make them stronger to be able to survive anemone stings and poison.  Why?  Because in anemone patches is where the jitterbugs lay their eggs and in those eggs is the key to finding a cure for the toxins the adult jitterbug gives off into the air of the city.  These toxins make people sick and shorten their lives.  The vaccination can only be found in the toxin-free jitterbug egg.  Caryn knows nothing but training for the mission of getting these eggs out of the anemones.  She is trained to stay under water for 10 minutes and more, she is pushed to gain physical strength, and she has to be the best of the others training if she is to be the one to gather the eggs.  Those outside of this facility may think her crazy though, as after she gets these eggs out of the anemone beds she will die at her young age form the anemone poison she is injected with as she enters the beds to get the eggs.  Caryn has never even seen the city.  Soon this changes though, and all because she shook a woman's hand.  It may not be best for her to see the city, but she is going to do it anyway because her friend would have wanted her to.  What could happen right?

Kai is from the city, technically, but has no home to speak of except the street.  He has learned at an early age to fend for himself and make due with what he has in life, which isn't much.  There is a street gang that he has managed to avoid so far, one that makes other boys do very illegal things for them and then pays them with things they need like food or money.  If one says no to this gang their family is targeted by the gang, Kai is somewhat lucky then, because he has no family; at least that he knows of.  Kai soon finds out, however, that if the gang really wants you for a job they will get you no matter what.  Soon he is roped into having to steal a large and rare gem for the gang in exchange for information the leader claims to have on Kai's Mother.  Kai ends up botching up his attempt at stealing the gem, but is lead down another unexpected road to get the gem after catching the eye of Caryn while she is choosing a companion to show her the city she so desires to learn about.  Caryn is a mystery to Kai, but soon he is becoming friends with her.  They each have secrets about themselves, but will they trust one another to disclose them to each other?  Will this trip to the city change Caryn and her views on the place she comes from and was trained in?  Is there more to this whole jigger egg gathering than she knows?  Soon Caryn finds out nothing is as it seems, but can she be strong enough to try and fix it? 

I found this book to have a very different plot line, but it was very good.  There was enough of a plot, action, adventure, and character information to keep the book flowing very well.  Very well written.  I especially liked the character of Kai, he may have been poor and on the street, but he took joys in simple things too, like spending time in the lake swimming.  He is a resourceful boy, who prefers not to steal even though he does live on the street.  He chooses to get his resources from the dumpsters rather than stealing them.  I liked the concept that even though he had hard knocks in life, he was a pretty good kid and wanted to do the right things.  Caryn was also an interesting character.  She is a very goal oriented girl, who never misses the city because she has never known it.  Once there she takes great appreciation in all of its wonder though...the food, the stars, the people, and the wonder of it all.  I like how she attaches to Kai, even though they could really be opposites   She never wants for much of anything (mostly because she doesn't know the outside world) and he has nothing to his name but the clothes he wears.  The friendship that happens in this book is wonderful.  The things Caryn learns in the city change her and some things she is not sure if she should believe or not.  I don't want to go too in depth as to why else I liked this book because I don't want to spoil it, but it is definitely a book that deserves to be read by all who like a good fantasy.  What Kai finds out as he moves on after Caryn goes back to where she comes from can change her fate, but can he figure out what it all means and tell her about it before it is too late and she makes her dive for the jigger eggs?  \
